Blue Ribbon, Fly-Fishing Fever in Heber Valley

As the sun rises over the mountaintops, the light wind carries the smell of Cottonwood trees and the occasional Spruce. The various shades of green encase the fisherman as he puts each foot into his waders.

Stepping into the small stream, the water rushes around and it’s obvious this is the right place. The fresh air makes any fisherman feel alive, as you throw your line into the water and wait out your catch, for the makings of a successful day. Any day on the Provo River in Heber Valley is a good day.

The Provo River is one of many Blue Ribbon locations in Heber Valley, along with Deer Creek and Jordanelle Reservoir. The designation was announced by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) and is given to indicate “environmentally productive waters that sustain healthy fish populations.” This preserves and helps the area maintain the fishing culture that you can expect and enjoy, and boost the local small-town community, giving you a sense of adventure and serenity.

Throw the line out and see the fish fly through the water. With an estimated 3,500-4,000 fish in every mile of stream, you won’t have an excuse if you come home empty-handed! Each location is slightly different, but the Provo River gives fishing enthusiasts the opportunity to reel in Brown Trout, Mountain Whitefish and the possible Rainbow Trout. Jordanelle Reservoir also offers the additional possibility of catching Kokanee Salmon, Smallmouth Bass and Cutthroat Trout.

Make your perfect fishing fantasy a reality and turn your morning of fishing into a whole weekend, as Heber Valley offers the best camping, boating and picnicking locations. Mix it up and take a hike to find the best overlook of the river from the top of the Wasatch Mountains.
