A Nighttime Knapsack
Packing for a successful (and safe) night-fishing adventure requires a little planning. Here are a few items you might want to consider carrying along if you plan to fish after the sun goes down.
-
Towel Take something to dry off with in case you meet a hole that’s deeper than you are tall.
-
Tools Nippers, hook sharpener, forceps, and a knife are musts.
-
Headlamps Use one headlamp on the water and carry another for backup.
-
Instant Coffee Turn any bottle of water into a bottle of pick-me-up.
-
Leaders and Tippet Take the heavy stuff because the fish aren’t shy at night.
-
Buff and Hat Both can keep your head and neck warm and offer protection from mosquitoes.
-
Sweater Something light but warm for when the nights get a little chilly.
-
First Aid Kit For minor cuts, scrapes, and accidental encounters with hooks.
-
Fly Boxes You don’t need much—large streamers, mice, and dry flies will do.
-
Comfortable Pack Carry it all in something lightweight, water resistant, and comfortable.
