Our fellow publication, Fly Tyer magazine, has a new iPad app available that allows you to subscribe to the iPadAppFTsame great content as the print version, optimized for the iPad and iPhone. We'll be using this model to set up a similar app for American Angler in the coming months, and eventually plan to have both magazines available as print-only, digital-only, and print-plus-digital. Before ordering, be sure to check out the Frequently Asked Questions for the app, and consider ordering directly from www.flytyer.com. It's cheaper that way, there are more subscription options, and better customer support. If you want to purchase single copies, however, you'll have to order them through iTunes. After reviewing the FAQ, head on over to the iPad app store and download the FREE app. Just search for "Fly Tyer."  The Spring 2009 issue is a complimentary download so you can see what the magazine looks like.

And The Survey Says…

For the last five years, fish and wildlife statisticians at Southwick Associates have been conducting a monthly survey of anglers to define economic trends that ultimately help guide resource managers, manufactures, and even media in the fishing opportunities and information they bring you. Recently the study has incorporated a broader perspective on fly anglers, and they are asking for our help in increasing participation. The link to the survey is below. It is now conducted bi-monthly, and each time you take it you are eligible for a random drawing to win one of five $100 gift certificates from the sporting retailer of your choice. So if you want your presence felt in these unique reports, stop by their site and consider taking the survey. Southwick guarantees that personal data will not be sold or traded and is for statistical purposes only. Click Here to take survey.

Fly fishing from a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) may not be for everyone or every application, but it's gaining a small following of dedicated practioners—and spawning the inevitable videos. We particularly like this one from meeshfish, hooking up among the kelp beds off the La Jolla coastline. Here's another perspective in, well, more pleasing conditions. Will an SUP work for river fishing? Click here and you be the judge. If not, you can always paddle out to your local icebergs and go surfing.

Our friend, author, and local manufacturer's rep James Buice sent us this video produced by Travis Rummel and Ben Knight at Felt Soul Media for the folks at Scott Rods. It's a wonderful short film capturing the soul of Scott's "Made in America" ethos for hand building fine fly rods, and another great production from Felt Soul. Can't wait to see what Scott unveils at this year's fly tackle dealer show in New Orleans. Also, be sure to check out Buice's excellent story on identifying masking hatches in the July/August issue of American Angler, on newsstands now.

Following the successful launch of its free fly fishing instructional clinics last year, Orvis has announced dates for this year's Fly-Fishing 101 programs. The premise is simple: Show up at any participating Orvis retail store or authorized dealer on the assigned dates, and take advantage of free instruction in the areas of rigging and casting your first fly rod. Students receive coupons for discounts on great Orvis gear and certificates for free membership in Trout Unlimited and Federation of Fly Fishers. The 101 classes start on May 21, and 201 clinics begin on June 4. Here is a list of dates and locations, or follow the Read More below for the full Orvis press release.
